But one of the largest plots belongs to Mary Ann Hall, who ran a high-end brothel just steps from the US Capitol for 40 years. Known as the Madam on the Mall, she started out as a prostitute herself, earning enough money to buy land and erect a 3-4 story building. Business boomed during the Civil War, though Hall was eventually found guilty of "keeping a bawdy house." Little is known about her, but artifacts found at the site in the mid-90s - now the home of the National Museum of the American Indian - reveal some clues.
